Carlie Howell

Carlie Howell is a Toronto based musician, composer and educator with a passion for learning and creative music making. She graduated with honours from the University of Toronto’s Jazz Performance Program on double bass, and has also studied the drumming and dancing traditions of West Africa, Japan and Brazil.

As an educator, Carlie’s strives to give developing artists of all ages the tools to express their ideas creatively and collaborate effectively. Carlie has studied music pedagogy with Orff Canada and Kindermusik Canada, and has completed 3 levels of Artist Educator training with the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM.) For over 10 years, she has been offering private and group instruction in piano, voice, bass, improvisation, theory, and exploratory music and movement, and in 2016 she opened Studio 307. She is the founder and leader of Carlie’s Angels, an all-girls summer rock band camp. She is an artist and facilitator with Intersections and The Lullaby Project, facilitating songwriting workshops, recordings and performances with women in Toronto. In 2017, she received an Ontario Arts Council Arts Education Grant to facilitate a collaborative digital media arts project between schools in Toronto and 6 Nations. She is also facilitates music and digital media arts in schools for Kick Start Arts. As Program Leader for The Music Champion Program through Learning Through the Arts from 2013-2016, Carlie led the in-school music education program in Toronto, and oversaw 4 other sites across Canada. In 2016, she curated the innaugural D|MA Digital Gallery featuring teacher and student work in the Design | Media Arts Program. Carlie regularly shares her teaching practices with other Artists and Teachers through professional development workshops and courses in Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, British Columbia, and Germany.
